2018 Micro-Tour 7: October 12-13 2018, "3 States" NY/CT/MA (Book at Bottom of Page)

"if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together" African Proverb

The rough plan here is a Metro North Train to Wassiac, then a 38 mile ride north/east through Connecticut and on to Beartown State Forest (69 Blue Hill Rd, Monterey, MA 01245), (413) 528-0904.

Beartown's twelve campsites are very popular for campers seeking a smaller campground with great opportunities for swimming and hiking. There are no showers or flush toilets at this campground. The wooded sites are tucked into a gentle slope leading to 35-acre Benedict Pond. A few coveted sites are right on the shoreline of the pond. The 1.5 mile Benedict Pond Loop Trail is a must in any season.

During the warm months the pristine 35-acre pond attracts swimmers, boaters and fishermen. An extensive network of trails on over 12,000 acres offers visitors a chance to glimpse deer, bear, bobcat, fisher and other wildlife, including the park's namesake, the Black Bear. Throughout the park brooks, beaver ponds, rich deciduous forest, flowering shrubs and wildflowers and fall foliage are plentiful.

During the late fall and through the winter, the forest becomes a winter wonderland, where visitors on cross-country skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles can explore a snow-covered wilderness. For more information, please visit: Winter Camping In Massachusetts

Beartown is a primitive campground and offers composting toilets, access to fresh water, but no showers or flush toilets. The twelve campsites are equipped with a fire ring, food storage locker and picnic table. There are no hookups or dumping facilities at this location. .

Be bear aware: Don't forget you are in Black Bear country. Never physically confront, feed, torment or throw anything at bears. Take appropriate precautions with food so as not to attract bears
