Recon Trips are quick excursions, primarily to scout and document an area for a larger trip in the future. These are not official "718 Trips and Tours" excursions, as there is no fee, nor is there any implied liability coverage. Just a fun, flash trip to get our of the city for a few days.
Bikepacking Stewart State Forest, April 13/14, 2017
I am heading up to Steward State Forest to scout camping and logistics for a bigger bikepacking trip later this year. The plan is to take Metro-North to Beacon, take the ferry across the Hudson, and then ride the 11 miles west into Stewart State Forest. I plan to go up on Thursaday morning (4/13), spend the day in the woods, camp, and return to NYC on Friday morning (4/14). I see this as primarily as a bikepacking trip due to the natures of the trails in the park.
The ride will be only about 11 miles from the ferry landing at Newburgh. The first 8 miles will be on a country road, the last 3 will be gravel track inside Stewart State Forrest. With the State Forrest, Primitive Camping is allowed. Depending on arrival time, the rest of the day will be spent exploring the parks trail network. I plan on leaving Friday late morning (to avoid rush hour ferry and train commute).
